Manufacturers of Powered Two-Wheelers and equipment, insurers, and users’ associations joined forces with the French Government to promote appropriate equipment for motorcyclists in France.

Frédéric Péchenard, Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety, and Thierry Archambault, President and delegate of CSIAM (Chambre Syndicale Internationale de l’Automobile et du Motocycle), in partnership with manufacturers, suppliers, insurers, charities, users’ and prevention associations, have signed on  December 3rd a national charter with the aim of encouraging users of powered two-wheelers to buy and wear protective clothing. 

Let’s gear up! 

The use of powered two-wheelers has diversified considerably in recent years, in cities as well as in the countryside. Today motorcycles and scooters are used for a short run around the corner, to commute to work on a daily basis or for longer trips on weekend. Every type of rider can find the most appropriate riding gear tailored for his purposes and comfort. This is the meaning of this charter which aims to stimulate, promote and support the purchase and wearing of motorcycle clothing with personal protection by users of powered two-wheelers (mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles without bodywork). The final objective is to reduce the severity of injuries that these particularly vulnerable road users can suffer in case of accident.

The signatories of the charter agree that "protective motorcycle clothing contributes to the responsible use of powered two wheelers".

The French Government welcomes the involvement of the PTW sector with all market operators, without exception - manufacturers, suppliers, insurers, users’ and prevention associations - everyone will act to achieve one goal: reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries on the roads. From the spring of 2014, users will find a specific commercial offer that will enable them to equip themselves with gloves, boots, jacket, pants and airbag. This offer entails four levels of equipment called "Safety Pack" adapted to the different usage patterns. 

The campaign is based on the creation of "SAFETY PACKS" each corresponding to an increasing level of protection, making it simple for costumers to choose the most appropriate product.

• Level 1 (jacket and gloves) suitable for occasional use

• Level 2 (Level 1 + boots), adapted to a more regular use

• Level 3 (Level 2 + pants), suitable for even more frequent use

• Level 4 (Level 3 + airbag), suitable for intensive use

For their part, users’ and prevention associations have committed to relaying this new offer to their members. 

A national communication campaign about Road Safety will be launched in spring 2014 and will aim at raising motorcyclists’ awareness about the importance of protective motorcycling gear.
