The International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (IMMA), of which ACEM is a proud member, has launched an updated publication titled “Safer Motorcycling: The Global Motorcycle Industry’s Approach to Road Safety”. This document provides valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers, safety managers, and institutions working to develop comprehensive and effective Powered Two-Wheeler (PTW) safety and transport policies at global, regional, and national levels.
The publication was presented during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech that brought together leaders and experts to accelerate action towards the Sustainable Development Goals’ target of halving global road deaths by 2030.
IMMA’s Four-Stage Strategy for road safety
IMMA encourages governments and stakeholders worldwide to adopt an holistic approach to PTW safety. The IMMA’s Four-Stage Strategy for road safety focuses on:
1. Integrating PTWs into transport policies at all levels.
2. Promoting rider-friendly infrastructure to enhance motorcyclist safety.
3. Encouraging lifelong training and education to ensure continued safety for riders.
4. Investing in safety-related technological developments to reduce the risk of accidents.

A strategic and inclusive approach
IMMA calls upon governments across the globe to take a strategic approach to PTW safety, actively involving all relevant stakeholders and using accurate, standardised data to inform and support any policy decisions. The approach should take into account the specifics of PTW characteristics and their specific use. Industry is keen to play a part in an integrated approach alongside other stakeholders.
Sustainable and safe motorcycling for societal benefit
The publication also stresses the importance of ensuring that the growth of PTWs worldwide is accompanied by safety and sustainability measures. Sustainable motorcycling allows society to fully benefit from the PTWs contribution to mobility of people and goods, improved access to fundamental services both in urban and rural areas, and enhanced social welfare and economic growth.
Best practices in safety and transport policy
The document offers a compendium of industry-led best practices for PTW safety and transport policy. Countries are encouraged to evaluate these best practices and consider their adoption, tailored to the specific needs of their regions.
The publication is available for consultation and download here.
