10th ACEM Conference: A Global Vision for the Powered Two-Wheeler market

10th ACEM conference

A Global Vision for the Powered Two-Wheeler market. The 10th ACEM Conference will be held in Brussels on 29 January 2014.  International trade will be the topic discussed at the 10th ACEM Conference, where manufacturers and EU Institutions will debate whether the way to recovery lies in creating favourable conditions for developing manufacturing and creating jobs in Europe or if the solution resides in exporting production facilities to third countries.

Since the first effects of the global economic and financial crisis were first felt in Europe in 2008, there have been significant knock on effects for industry. As a result, sales of motorcycles, scooters and other light vehicles have dropped 51%, putting considerable pressure on the entire sector. Five years later, the European motorcycle market continues to find itself in a continuing state of uncertainty.

At the same time, on a global level, opportunities for growth have arisen in non-EU markets. These markets account for 95% of the worldwide volumes of Powered Two-Wheeler sales. Among the most promising markets are Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Indeed, ACEM manufacturers have established operations in most of these markets.

However a lack of harmonisation of technical standards and specifications leads to an environment of sub-optimal trading conditions. Moreover protectionist policies continue to be on the rise across the world. By pushing for the removal existing trade barriers and similar regulatory obstacles and fostering the adoption of of global standards, the EU could create conditions for fair competition and improve market access for EU businesses.

At the 10th ACEM Conference industry representatives and EU policy-makers will discuss whether the way to recovery lies in creating favourable conditions for developing manufacturing and creating jobs in Europe or if the solution resides in exporting production facilities to third countries.
