A total of 267,667 powered-two and three-wheelers were registered during the first three months of 2016

A total of 267,667 powered-two and three-wheelers were registered during the first three months of 2016 in the EU. This represents an increase of 6.5% compared to the 251,420 vehicles registered during the same period of 2016.

Registrations performed positively in all the key markets, including Italy (49,576 units, 21.5%), Spain (31,679 units, +13.5%), UK (27,395 units, +7.6%), Germany (49,748 units, 4.5%) and France (49,505 units, +0.5%). 

Motorcycle registrations

Cumulative motorcycle registrations grew by 7.8% during the first three months of 2016 on a year-on year basis. A total of 205,258 motorcycles were registered between January and March 2016, against 190,429 during the same period of 2015.

Year-on-year motorcycle registrations increased in most key European markets, including Italy (44,573 units, 23.9%), Spain (28,528 units, +15.5%), the UK (25,519 units, 8.5%) and France (33,732 units, +0.8%). They decreased in Germany (38,115 units, -4.8%).

Moped registrations

A total of 62,409 mopeds were registered during the first three months of 2016 in the EU, whilst 60,991 had been registered during the same period of 2015. This represents an increase of 2.3%.

Moped registrations increased in Germany (11,633 units, +54.2%), Netherlands (12,851 units, +3.3%) and Italy (5,003 units, +3.1%), but decreased in France (15,733 units, -0.1%) and Spain (3,151 units, -2.3%).

ACEM welcomes Royal Enfield and Kwang Yang Motor Company as guest members

The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers has further increased its representation of the motorcycle industry with the addition of two new guest members: Royal Enfield and Kwang Yang Motor Company (KYMCO). 

The decision was approved by unanimity at the last ACEM’s General Assembly on 7 April 2016.

KYMCO is a Taiwanese company that manufactures scooters, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles for worldwide distribution. Its headquarters and factory are located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It produced 516,200 units in 2014 including two-wheelers and all-terrain vehicles.

ROYAL ENFIELD is an Indian motorcycle manufacturing company with factories in Chennai, India. Originally a British motorcycle company, it is now a subsidiary of Eicher Motors Limited, an Indian automaker. ROYAL ENFIELD specialises in the mid-size motorcycle market (250cc to 650 cc) and manufactured close to 450,000 units in 2015.

With the addition of these two companies, which are present in the European market, ACEM membership will include a total of 15 manufacturing members, 3 guest manufacturing members and 17 national associations.

Motorcycle registrations increased by 8.1% in Q1 2016 in the largest EU markets

Motorcycle registrations in the largest EU markets - France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK - grew by 8.1% during Q1 2016, compared to the first quarter of 2015, reaching more than 170,400 units.

The strongest performance was recorded in Italy (+23.9%, 44,573 units), followed by Spain (15.5%, 28,528 units).

The UK market grew by 8.5% (25,519 units), whilst registrations remained stable in France (+0.8%, 33,732 units) and decreased in Germany (-4.8%, 38,115 units).

Powered-two and three-wheeler registrations increase by 11.5% during the first two months of 2016

A total of 131,693 powered-two and three-wheelers were registered during the first two months of 2016 in the EU. This represents an increase of 13.4% compared to the 116,087 vehicles registered during the same period of 2016.

Registrations performed positively in Italy (27,933 units, +26%), Spain (19,665 units, +24.4%), UK (10,669 units, +18.3%) and Germany (16,105 units, +11.2%).

Motorcycle registrations

Cumulative motorcycle registrations grew by 18.9% during the first two months of 2016 on a year-on year basis. A total of 99,363 motorcycles were registered between January and February 2016, against 83,573 during the same period of 2015. Year-on-year motorcycle registrations increased in most key European markets, including Italy (24,954 units, 29.5%), Spain (17,763 units, +29.1%), UK (9,641 units, 20.5%), Germany (12,709 units, +11%) and France (18,547 units, +4.4%).

Moped registrations

A total of 32,330 mopeds were registered during the first two months of 2016 in the EU, whilst 32,514 had been registered during the same period of 2015. This represents a decrease of 0.6%. Registrations increased in some of the key markets such as Germany (+11.7%, 3,396 units), Netherlands (7,813 units, +7.2%) and Italy (2,979 units, +2.3%). They decreased Spain (1,902 units, -7.1%) and France (9,687 units, -1.3%).

New road safety campaign encouraging road users to watch for two-wheelers in the Netherlands

On 17 March a new motorcycle safety campaign based on the theme ‘Good to see you!’ (Graag Gezien!) was launched in the Netherlands by the Dutch organisation ‘Motoplatform’.

The safety campaign focuses on encouraging drivers to look for motorcyclists on the road to reduce the number of collisions caused by car drivers noticing very late or completely overlooking riders.

The campaign will feature online videos that will be distributed through social media channels as well as radio spots at peak audience hours.

The campaign ‘Good to see you!’ is one of the measures foreseen in an Action Plan to improve motorcycle safety, recently adopted by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment.

i_HeERO launches online survey to understand riders’ expectations of eCall devices

The members of the i_HeERO project have launched an online survey to gain a better understanding of riders’ expectations of eCall devices for powered-two wheelers and the nature of accident scenarios across Europe.

The i_HeERO survey will run until end of May 2016. Its results will help researchers to gain insights into what motorcycle and scooter riders understand by a potential eCall solution for powered-two wheelers, as well as to understand certain factors about powered-two wheeler users’ accident experiences.

No personal data will be collected in the process and all of the answers will be kept confidential.

What are eCall devices?

eCall technology allows for an emergency call to be made, either automatically or manually, from a crashed vehicle immediately after a road collision has occurred.

A recently published European Regulation (Regulation 2015/758) makes eCall devices mandatory in cars in Europe as of April 2018.

The i_HeERO project is the 3rd large-scale project in the series supported by the European Commission.

The German Institute for Motorcycle Safety calls for papers on scooter and motorcycle safety

The German Institute for Motorcycle Safety (Institut für Zweiradsicherheit e.V., ) has announced a call for papers on scooter and motorcycle safety. The deadline for abstract submissions is 17 March 2016.  

The selected papers will be presented during the 11th International Motorcycle Conference, which will take place in Cologne, Germany, on 3 and 4 October 2016. The event will give scientists, researchers and practitioners the opportunity to exchange views and discuss state-of-the-art research on powered-two and powered-three wheeler safety.

More than 1,209,000 new motorcycles and mopeds registered in Europe in 2015

New motorcycle and moped registrations increased by 5.1% in 2015 compared to the same period last year to reach 1,213,748, according to figures released today by ACEM, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers.

The country where with more vehicles registered was France (242,885 vehicles, -3.4%), followed by Italy (196,653 vehicles, +6.4%), Germany (184,299, +4.8%), Spain (148,488 units, +17.6%) and the UK (114,811, +12.8%). 

Strong growth in the motorcycle segment across Europe

Motorcycle registrations grew by 10.3% during 2015 compared to 2014. Italy was the country where most motorcycles were registered: 172,033 (+9.9%), followed by France (153,239 vehicles, -0.1%) and Germany (151,661, +7.1%).

The fourth and fifth place are for countries that attained double digit growth: Spain (132,532 vehicles, 18.9%) and the UK (105,417 vehicles, +15.6%). 

Moped registrations continue to decline in most European markets

The moped segment continued to decrease through 2015. A total of 328,305 mopeds were registered across the European Union (-6.7% on a year-on-year basis).

The largest market for mopeds were France (89,646 mopeds, -8.7%), the Netherlands (65,932 mopeds, +4.9%), Germany (32,638 mopeds, -4.6%), Poland (30,430 mopeds, -25.3%), and Italy (24,620 mopeds, -13.2%). Spain was the only large European market in which moped registrations increased in 2015: 15,956 units (+7.8%).

Comments from ACEM Secretary General

Commenting on the recent evolution of the European motorcycle and moped market ACEM Secretary General Antonio Perlot said:

“We will still need to wait until July 2016 to assess whether this is a real recovery, but the sector seems to have regained momentum in 2015. This was a very positive year for the industry, with registrations increasing in most European countries, particularly in large markets like Italy, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom”.

“In any case, the sector still faces a delicate situation in Europe. In 2015 about 1.21 million vehicles were registered. That is still less than half the registration levels we saw before the economic crisis (2.43 million units in 2007).”

“This industry needs supportive policies that promote job creation in the manufacturing sector as well as vehicle exports to third countries”.

ACEM Secretary General outlines the priorities of the sector during the first GEAR 2030 meeting

On 26 January 2016, ACEM Secretary General Antonio Perlot presented the motorcycle industries’ views on the present and future of the sector at the first meeting of the High Level Group GEAR 2030.

During his presentation Mr Perlot explained that the economic downturn has put considerable pressure on the sector and that there is a clear need for policies that create favourable and predictable conditions to help motorcycle manufacturers to continue investing in Europe.

Fair and balanced trade agreements, a clear and workable type-approval framework as well as market surveillance activities, were mentioned as good examples of some of the policies needed by the motorcycle industry.

Mr Perlot also emphasized that emerging technologies such as intelligent transport systems and, in the future, automated vehicles have a high safety potential for vulnerable road users. 

A space for cooperation between industry and policy-makers

Commenting on the first meeting of GEAR 2030, ACEM and BMW Motorrad President Stephan Schaller said:

“We welcome this major initiative and we will remain closely involved in the work done in GEAR 2030. It is particularly encouraging that the European Commission has decided to continue the good cooperation with ACEM members, and to follow up on the work done by the Cars 2020 forum”.

The European Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Elżbieta Bieńkowska, said:

“I expect this group to develop a forward-looking agenda to fuel innovation, adapt to new trends and reinforce access to growth-driven markets. With this process I am also turning a new page in cooperation with the industry. I trust we can build a positive agenda”.

About GEAR 2030

The High Level Group GEAR 2030 is an EU initiative which will run for 2 years and will discuss and formulate recommendations to ensure that the European automotive industry remains competitive at the international stage.

The first GEAR 2030 meeting took place on 26 January 2016 and brought together several European associations including ACEM, ACEA and ETRMA, as well as representatives from Member States, trade unions, consumer organisations and NGOs.

The meeting was also attended by the several European Commissioners including Elżbieta Bieńkowska (Internal Market, Industry and Entrepreneurship); Günther Oettinger (Digital Economy and Society); Marianne Thyssen (Employment and Social Affairs); and Violeta Bulc (Mobility and Transport).

Motorcycle registrations continue to increase in the EU: +9.3% in the first 11 months of 2015

A total of 1,151,657 powered-two and three-wheelers were registered during the first eleven months of 2015 in the EU.

This represents an increase of 4.4% compared to the 1,102,996 vehicles registered during the same period of 2014.

Registrations performed positively in Spain (138,590 units, +16.7%), the UK (109,542 units, +12.7%), Italy (190,405 units, 6.2%), and Germany (176,711 units, +3.0%). They decreased in France (227,817 units, -4.2%).

Motorcycle registrations

Cumulative motorcycle registrations grew by 9.3% during the first eleven months of 2015 on a year-on year basis. A total of 846,087 motorcycles were registered between January and November 2015, against 774,387 during the same period of 2014.

Year-on-year motorcycle registrations increased in most key European markets, namely Spain (124,020 units, +18.0%), the UK (100,775 units, +15.6%), Italy (167,035 units, +9.8%), Germany (146,862 units, +6.1%).

Motorcycle registrations decreased in France (145,303 units, -0.8%).

Moped registrations

A total of 305,570 mopeds were registered during the first eleven months of 2015 in the EU, whilst 328,609 had been registered during the same period of 2014.

This represents a decrease of 7.0%. Registrations increased in Spain (14,570, +6.2%), although they decreased in Germany (29,849 units, -10.0%), France (82,514 units, -9.5%), the UK (8,767 units, -12.7%), and Italy (23,370 units, -14.1%).

Motorcycle registrations in the EU continue to increase: +9.2% during the first ten months of 2015

A total of 1,091,956 powered-two and three-wheelers were registered during the first ten months of 2015 in the EU.

This represents an increase of 3.9% compared to the 1,051,142 vehicles registered during the same period of 2014.

Registrations performed positively in Spain (128,830 units, +17.2%), the UK (102,774 units, +12.5%), Italy (181,697 units, 5.6%), and Germany (173,027 units, +3.7%). They decreased in France (214,841 units, -4.2%).

Motorcycle registrations

Cumulative motorcycle registrations grew by 9.2% during the first ten months of 2015 on a year-on year basis.

A total of 807,239 motorcycles were registered between January and October 2015, against 739,486 during the same period of 2014.

Year-on-year motorcycle registrations increased in most key European markets, namely Spain (115,390 units, +18.8%), the UK (94,721 units, +15.4%), Italy (159,614 units, +9.1%), Germany (143,178 units, +6.2%). Motorcycle registrations decreased in France (137,713 units, -0.9%).

Moped registrations

A total of 284,717 mopeds were registered during the first ten months of 2015 in the EU, whilst 311,656 had been registered during the same period of 2014.

This represents a decrease of 8.6%. Registrations increased in Spain (13,440, +5.7%), although they decreased in Germany (29,849 units, -6.5%), France (77,128 units, -9.4%), the UK (8,053 units, -13.1%), and Italy (22,083 units, -14.6%).

ACEM President Stephan Schaller discusses the outlook for the motorcycle industry in Pan European Networks

Pan European Networks interviewed ACEM and BMW Motorrad President Stephan Schaller to get his views on the outlook for the motorcycle industry.

The interview, published in the November 2015 edition of Pan European networks, focuses on recent developments in the L-category industry, how European research can help the industry to develop new vehicle concepts, and the current situation of the European market for mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles.

Michael Brennan, the editor of Pan European Networks, and Mr Schaller also discussed the importance of the European Commission's international trade agenda for the industry, as well as private and public cooperation in other policy areas.

About 300 motorcyclist improved their riding skills thanks to ANESDOR and the Catalan Traffic Service

On 25 November 2015 ANESDOR and the Catalan Traffic Service, Servei Català de Trànsit, completed the first round of Formació 3.0., a training programme that aims at improving motorcyclists’ riding skills in different parts of Spain.

Helping riders to improve their skills

A total of 287 motorcyclists participated in the first 7 sessions of Formació 3.0. This training programme allowed motorcyclists to practice their riding skills on some of the more popular back roads in the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona.

All riding sessions were video-recorded, shown to participants and analysed. Motorcyclists received detailed and tailored feedback from specialist motorcycle trainers and members of the regional Catalonian police, the Mossos d’Esquadra.

Some of the areas where further improvement for riders was needed included: braking techniques, cornering speed, use of available space on the road, vehicle maintenance, and anticipation of possible dangerous situations on the road.

A joint initiative between ANESDOR and the Catalan Traffic Service

Formació 3.0 is a joint initiative between ANESDOR and the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT).

It is also part of ACEM’s efforts to enhance cooperation between national administrations, vehicle users and industry representatives to improve motorcycling safety across Europe.

Formació 3.0 training sessions were funded by the SCT.

Commenting on the training programme, ANESDOR’s Secretary General, José María Riaño, said: “Thanks to this program hundreds of motorists had an excellent opportunity to improve their riding skills in a setting where they ride frequently during the weekends: the back roads of the Catalan country side”.

“Advanced training for motorcyclists is essential to prevent riding mistakes and to reduce the possibility of a fatal accident”.

The Director of the Catalan Traffic Service, Eugenia Domenech, said: “We want this programme to become a tool to help motorcyclists to improve their riding techniques and their safety on the roads, whilst enjoying a safe ride”.

How off-road sports can boost local economies in the UK. The case of Skegness Annual Beach Race

The Skegness Annual Beach Race, which takes place on 7 and 8 November, is helping to extend the tourist season, according to a report by East Lindsey District Council. Last year’s race attracted over 20,000 spectators – the largest number to date.

The event is popular with both out of town visitors and local residents, injecting nearly 750,000 pounds into the local economy.

The race is organised by the Amateur Motorcycle Association (AMCA), a not for profit organisation which exists to promote grass roots participation in off-road motorcycle sport, particularly motocross. 

What local authorities think

Commenting on the event, Councillor Adam Grist, now Portfolio Holder for Market Towns and Rural Economy, said:

“Since the race first came to Skegness in 2010, AMCA has helped to provide a huge boost to the town at a traditionally quieter time of year – last year with upwards of 20,000 people attending the two day event.

“This provides an increased footfall in the town which supports local businesses, amenities and attractions with people staying, eating and shopping locally".

Town Manager Lisa Collins explained it was particularly helpful to seaside traders: “(The Race) is helping Skegness extend its traditional visitor season: it allows traders to remain open for an extra weekend, in particular the traditional seaside traders on the seafront”.

“It is key to the town’s future that we retain such events to actively promote Skegness as an all year round visitor destination.” 

Empowering local authorities to organise motor sport events

UK Government research informed last year’s decision to pass legislation making it easier for local authorities to stage their own motorsport events.

The UK Government press release which announced the introduction of new legislation included this statement from Roads Minister Robert Goodwill:

“Motor sport events are great fun, extremely popular and make a valuable contribution to the economy. Allowing local authorities to organise carefully managed motor sports events is great news for the industry and will potentially benefit local communities around Great Britain.”

EICMA to host its annual motorcycle show in Milan between 17 and 22 November

EICMA, the ‘Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori’, will host the 73rd edition of its Worldwide Motorcycle Exhibition in Milan between 17 and 22 November 2015.

The 2015 edition will include a space dedicated to EICMA’s latest safety campaign ‘Watch out for two wheelers’

This initiaitve is placed under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the government of the city of Milan and counts with the support of the Italian Foundation for two-wheelers.

The EICMA exhibition, which has been running for 100 years now, is one the motorcycle industry’s most important events. Every year manufacturers showcase their latest and upcoming models of motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles and quadricycles.

The 2014 edition of EICMA attracted about 628,600 visitors and about 6,940 media professionals.

A total of 1,010,413 powered-two and three-wheelers were registered during the first nine months of 2015 in the EU.

This represents an increase of 4.4% compared to the 967,368 vehicles registered during the same period of 2014.

Registrations performed positively in Spain (116,475 units, +19.9%), the UK (94,248 units, +12.3%), Italy (168,831 units, 6.4%), and Germany (161,484 units, +2.7%). They decreased in France (196,434 units, -2.6%).

Motorcycle registrations

Cumulative motorcycle registrations grew by 10.1% during the first nine months of 2015 on a year-on year basis. A total of 752,251 motorcycles were registered between January and September 2015, against 683,173 during the same period of 2014.

Year-on-year motorcycle registrations increased in all key European markets, namely Spain (104,349 units, +21.6%), the UK (86,972 units, +15.1%), Italy (148,554 units, +9.9%), Germany (137,186 units, +7.0%), and France (127,224 units, +0.4%).

Moped registrations

A total of 258,162 mopeds were registered during the first nine months of 2015 in the EU, whilst 284,195 mopeds had been registered during the same period of 2014. This represents a decrease of 9.2%.

Registrations increased in Spain (12,126, + 7.3%), although they decreased in France (69,210 units, -8.6%), the UK (7,276 units, -12.3%), Germany (24,298 units, -16.2%) and Italy (20,277 units, -13.6%).

ANCMA and FMI will organise free training sessions in Italy as part of Refresh project in January 2016

As part of their Refresh project, ANCMA-Confindustria, the Italian Association of Manufacturers of Bicycles, Motorcycles and Accessories, and the Italian Motorcycle Federation (FMI) will organise free training sessions in Italy as of January 2016. 

The project, whose first training sessions were already organised on 8 and 9 October 2015, is specifically designed for riders who are returning to motorcycling after an extended period of time. Evidence suggests that riders that stopped riding for a prolonged period can develop a false sense of security and, as a result, are more likely to be involved in accidents.

The Refresh initiative also aims at improving the riding skills of people who ride motorcycles of up to 125cc using their B license.

This safety-oriented trainign scheme will help both types of riders to to gain a better understanding of the specificities of motorcycle riding and to improve their risk awareness skills.

A theoretical and practical approach to motorcycle training

The first training sessions of Refresh were organised on 8 and 9 October and were delivered by qualified instructors from the Italian Motorcycle Federation at the Monza motorsport circuit.

The training covered both practical and theoretical aspects of motorcycle riding. The former included elements such as risk perception, vehicle passive safety features and vehicle maintenance. The latter allowed participants to practice different exercises such as avoidance of sudden obstacles, emergency braking techniques, braking with and without ABS, etc.

This allowed participants to increase their riding and risk awareness skills, within a secure and controlled training environment.

A scheme supported by public and the private actors

This important initiative is by ANCMA-Confindustria and by the Italian Motorcycle Federation (FMI) in order to improve the safety of moped and motorcycle users, which are considered by the EU as vulnerable road users.

The project, which is part of the implementation of ACEM’s road safety strategy, also benefits from the support of the Italian Ministry of Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

Powered-two and three-wheeler registrations increase by 4.2% on a year-on-year basis

A total of 901,552 powered-two and three-wheelers were registered during the first eight months of 2015 in the EU. This represents an increase of 4.2% compared to the 865,564 vehicles registered during the same period of 2014.

Registrations performed positively in Spain (102,358 units, +20.4%), the UK (80,639 units, +13.3%), Italy (151,374 units, 5.7%), and Germany (145,257 units, +0.8%). They decreased in France (173,711 units, -2.5%). 

Motorcycle registrations

Cumulative motorcycle registrations grew by 10.2% during the first eight months of 2015 on a year-on year basis. A total of 676,842 motorcycles were registered between January and August 2015, against 613,945 during the same period of 2014.

Year-on-year motorcycle registrations increased in all key European markets, namely Spain (91,683 units, +22.%), the UK (74,527 units, +15.9%), Italy (133,588 units, +9.1%), Germany (127,196 units, +7.3%), and France (114,396 units, +0.9%).

Moped registrations

A total of 224,710 mopeds were registered during the first eight months of 2015 in the EU, whilst 251,619 mopeds had been registered during the same period of 2014. This represents a decrease of 10.7%.

Registrations increased in Spain (10,675, + 8.0%), although they decreased in France (59,315 units, -8.6%), the UK (6,112 units, -11.3%), Italy (17,786 units, -14.3%) and Germany (18,061 units, -29.4%).

“Watch for two-wheelers”, says ANCMA-Confindustria in new road safety campaign

ANCMA-Confindustria, the Italian Association of Manufacturers of Bicycles, Motorcycles and Accessories, presented a new road safety campaign “Watch for two-wheelers” (“Occhio alle due ruote”) on 6 October 215.

This initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of sharing the road with two-wheeled vehicles (bicycles, scooters and motorcycles), as well as to inform public debate on road safety in Italy.

To encourage car users to watch for two-wheelers, special stickers will be distributed to providers of car-sharing services and taxi drivers. The stickers will serve as a reminder of looking for bicycles, motorcycles and scooters on the road before opening car doors.

This initiative, which is part of ACEM’s road safety strategy, will involve car sharing companies in the municipality of Milan and the Metropolitan City (car2go, Enjoy, E-Go Lead me, Twist and Share'nGo) as well as the company MyTaxi.

The campaign is placed under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the government of the city of Milan and counts with the support of the Italian Foundation for two-wheelers.

“Watch for motorcycles”… in social networks and EICMA

The campaign "Watch for two-wheelers" includes the creation of the website www.occhioalle2ruote.it where it is possible to find information on safety rules, road safety tips and other materials. You can learn more about this campaign on the Facebook page Occhioalle2ruote and on Twitter via the hashtag #occhioalle2ruote.

Road safety will also be one of the key themes of the EICMA motorcycle show which will run from 17 until 22 November 2015 in Milan, Italy.
