The motorcycle industry supports the adoption of a Safe System approach towards motorcycling, simultaneously addressing human, vehicle and road infrastructure factors. This approach should be combined with a stronger engagement with civil society and the public and private sectors to result in further improvements in motorcycle safety.

When focusing on users, the European Motorcycle Training Quality Label stands as an excellent example of how industry players, NGOs, motorcycle trainers and users’ organisations can work together for motorcycle safety.
ACEM, the German Road Safety Council (DVR) and the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) are currently involved in the promotion of high-quality training schemes through this initiative that grants a quality label to training schools after a rigorous and objective evaluation. The European Motorcycle Training Quality Label has already received the Excellence in Road Safety Award 2019 acknowledging the support to motorcyclists in the identification of the best post-license training programmes in various member states by granting a quality label.
Good health is not only of value to the individual but also contributes to general social and economic growth. Besides the general availability of healthcare, health can be determined by individual characteristics and behaviours and by external socio-economic and environmental factors, such as living conditions, air quality and noise.
According to European Environment Agency (EEA), air pollution is the number-one environmental cause of death in Europe. Noise exposure also reduces life satisfaction and perception of well-being reported by the WHO as a cause of ill health in Western Europe. In addition, the exposure to and possible negative health impacts of toxic chemicals found in the environment and food are coming under increasing scrutiny from scientific and regulatory communities worldwide, including in Europe.
ACEM and its members are committed to finding solutions to improve good health in the EU, be it for the users of powered two-wheelers or for EU citizens as a whole. The introduction of new pollutant emission limits in 2016 and 2020 (Euro4 and Euro5), the Industry’s request for the introduction of a more real-world type approval sound emission procedure at UNECE level, the call for more stringent surveillance to avoid tampering or the proactive stance requesting the inclusion of L-category vehicles in the future End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation are just a few examples of the manufacturers’ dedication to improving the situation on all fronts.
